Addicted to Hurrry

“They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze…” Genesis 3:8

The pleasure power of speed is not limited to our childhood.- Who enjoys a slow computer? Being stuck behind a slow driver? Store lines? Waiting for Christmas?

Anybody ever eaten a meal from a fast food chain? Why do we do that? Does it taste better than a home-cooked meal? Have you ever eaten a meal slowly just to savor the flavor?

When hurry becomes a chronic condition, we rush whole performing even the most mundane tasks, it may be said that we have become addicted to hurry. HOw many of you look forward to Christmas and then all of a sudden, the holiday is over? Or you look forward to a special event and then it comes and goes in the blink of an eye?

Lesson 1: The Idolatry of Speed

Speed is all around us; technology, communication, transportation… Do you think life has been enhanced or diminished by speed?

“Speed is not just the main ingredient of what we say, but what we do. We gravitate toward speed even when there is no reason to. It is not just that speed is all around us. Something more ominous is at work: speed is inside of us. Many of us are inhabited by speed impulse. We would do well to be concerned: Anything inside of you is not just a matter of word and deed, but of heart and soul.” Do you agree with this statement.?

How do we balance out life with speed and God?

Do we sometimes suffer from loyalty confusion: treating something that is not God as if it were God? The fruits of the spirit in Galatians 5:22 don’t list speed, however, patience is listed as one.

1. You are behind a driver who has not noticed the light has turned green. How do you respond?

2. You are in a slow-moving grocery line with time to spare. What are you most likely to do?

3.In your conversations with others, how often do you interrupt mid-sentence?

4. How much time during the day do you devote to meditation, prayer, just taking it easy?

5. Someone/something has interrupted your planned activity. How do you feel?

6. When you see a rainbow, how long does it hold your attention?

7. When was the last time you paid serious attention to something that didn’t involve you?

8. How often do you hurry from one activity to the next?

9. How often do you check your facebook? phone? computer? e-mail?

In Matthew Chapter 14, in two different verses it talks about Jesus retreating to a lonely place to pray.
